The Central Park softball bench beginnings
The Green Salsa Company started as a snack for softball because I didn't want to eat cookies for dinner. I joined a team for their softball games on the Great Lawn of Central Park. The snacks on the bench when I arrived were cookies and pretzels. I wanted to contribute something healthy so I brought a store-bought jar of salsa and some chips to the next game. That salsa was like eating cold pasta sauce. Not a hit. I said "I can make better salsa!" I bought the ingredients listed on the label and whipped up a batch of tomato salsa in my food processor. I brought the freshly made salsa to the next game and it was a huge hit!
A shot of energy for the 7th inning stretch! My softball team has been my test kitchen and they have been happy to make suggestions and requests as they gobbled down gallons of salsas, guacamole and pesto over the course of the last few summers. I have perfected the recipes with their help and the salsas have become my calling card. I bring it to parties and for holidays and to the softball field where it is now a time honored tradition. I have since added three other products that made their debut at the various fields we play on every summer.
When I started we were on the Great Lawn and then we moved to Heckscher Playground where I added Guacamole to the snack table to celebrate our new field. I brought Mango Salsa to the North Meadow fields for the first time in 2009 as a fun substitute for Tomato salsa when mangos were plentiful. Our bartender Mojito Man inspired the Pesto which was a big hit in the Sheep Meadow which is right above the Heckscher Playground Softball Fields
Roasted Tomatillo Salsa Riverside
Park at 103rd and Riverside is on of our "away" fields in the summer.
Since they are open year round a few of us go out there off season for a
fun workout. I wanted to work on a roasted vegetable product for the
winter of 2011. So I got some tomatillos and roasted all of the
ingredients, blended and a new roasted salsa was bornIt has been so popular that I added to the Green Salsa Company product line and named it for our winter field.
So the available products are:
Great Lawn Tomato Salsa
Hechscher Playground Guacamole
North Meadow Mango Salsa
Sheeps Meadow Pesto
Riverside Park Roasted Tomatillo Salsa
